How To Detect The Dispersion Performance Of Pigments?

The dispersion of pigments in the application is a very important indicator, directly affect the color, gloss and even use performance of the product, it contains particle size, particle size (average and deviation), the storage stability of the dispersion system three aspects, how to judge the pigment dispersion, the following three detection methods:

Fine plate method:
Hegman is a simple and fast abrasive degree test for liquid systems. Haishi's degree plate is a surface processing with two shallow grooves of rectangular stainless steel material, shallow grooves by precision processing from 100 microndepth depth to 0 microns slowly shallow, drip plus a small amount of grinding material in the deepest groove, with stainless steel double-edged scraper to a uniform speed scraping across the entire surface to the depth of the groove zero end. The scale equidistant distance is marked next to the groove, and the scale zero at the deepest point of the groove is evenly reduced to scale 8 or 10 on the horizontal surface of the scale plate. The first place where the specimen appears dense particle points, i.e. the scale of pigment particles that are clearly protruding from the surface of the abrasive material is considered to be an indicator of dispersion. Usually at least 7 scales are considered to have been effectively dispersed.

Finetest testing:
The use of optical microscopes provides a fast, pigment size-intuitive fineness detection method. The coloring force of the pigment can also be observed.
In addition, pigment particle morphology, size and distribution, as well as pigment flocculation can be observed. The specific experimental method is to drop a small drop of grinding material on the slide, and then cover it with a cover slide. Note that you should not apply too much force when covering the cover glass to prevent the material to be over-divided from affecting the inspection. The main disadvantage of optical microscope is that the resolution rate is too low, the minimum analysis rate is only about 2 microns.

Electron microscope fineness testing method:
The high resolution of electron microscopes is a highlight, and it can visually observe the particle size of pigments, which is precisely the size of the pigment smaller can have a decisive effect on the transparency of the coating, fluidity and color equality.
The disadvantage of electron microscope finetest test ingressis is that the equipment is expensive, the test time is long, the test data needs to be analyzed and interpreted by experienced technicians, and it is also necessary to wait for the sample to dry before it can be measured.
